We are first and second year medical students at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry with an interest in global health awareness and education. We organize the Hungry for Change gala yearly to fund scholarships that help medical students travel to resource-poor regions for clinical health electives. Applications are carefully reviewed and only granted to those students who demonstrate enthusiasm about bringing their experiences home and improving global health education at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. Schulich students realize that global health is local health, and involvement in global health electives is just one of the many ways that Schulich students are involved in the community. This is why the gala also hopes to gather awareness and support for other non-profit global health initiatives. The chosen charities to support for the 2017 gala are Haven Toronto and Meals on Wheels London.

Haven Toronto (formerly The Good Neighbours’ Club) is a safe, welcoming drop-in centre in Toronto for older homeless, marginally housed and socially isolated men. The Club is open 365 days a year and provides a place of refuge for men over the age of 50, as well as hot meals, showers, laundry, counselling, nursing care and more. One of Hungry for Change’s 2017 keynote speakers, Dr. Dosani, is heavily involved in the organization. Learn more about Haven Toronto here.

Meals on Wheels London works to promote wellness, health and independence through transportation and nutritious meal services in the London community. Meals on Wheels partners with volunteers to provide services  for adults with disabilities and seniors. Learn more about their initiatives here.
